Client: Geological Museum (Lisbon)
Challenge: Lisbon’s Geological Museum wished to develop a catalogue-like website to showcase its vast collection in a practical yet aesthetically appealing and rigorous way.
Approach:
- Open Access: the project aimed at making scientific information about its collection open to the public, through the creation of an online catalogue.
- Scientific rigor: ensuring the accuracy of all content was a priority. Each item went through a rigorous validation process by the team at the museum before contents were uploaded to the catalogue’s database. Photographies of each item were also taken with attention to the scale and specific features of every piece in the collection.
- Appealing aesthetics: A minimalistic yet appealing approach was chosen, making information easily accessible to all visitors, including people with some degrees of vision impairment.

Results:
- Online access to 450+ itens: today, more than 450 pieces of the museum’s vast collection are showcased via the online catalogue, offering general public and scientific researchers a useful database.
- Accessibility: The website’s minimalistic theme was central in developing a functional and accessible way of catering to a wide variety of audiences and to navigate through the museum’s collection.

Conclusion:
The development of this website was a major boost in terms of visibility for the Geological Museum and its internationally-relevant collection.
